Oxidative TherapiesOzone, Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy (HBOT). Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UVBI) and hydrogen peroxide are all oxidative therapies and are a unique form of therapy that both heals and detoxifies at the same time.

 

Breathing is an oxidative process as is converting sugar to energy in the body. The body also uses oxidation as the first line of defense against bacteria, virus, yeast and parasites. We know there can be no life if oxidation does not occur. 

 

What Is Ozone?
It is a very powerful therapy that helps increase oxygenation, detoxification and immune stimulation. There are only a limited number of clinics in North America that offers this treatment. The oxygen you breathe is present in the air as a pair of oxygen atoms. This is the most stable form of oxygen, and it’s colorless. Ozone is a blue colored form of oxygen (it is what makes the sky blue), and unlike regular oxygen, it is composed of three oxygen atoms instead of two. It is the addition of the third oxygen atom that makes ozone “supercharged” oxygen, and gives it all of its remarkable medical properties.


The use of ozone to treat various medical conditions was first developed in Germany in the early 1950's.Today, medical ozone therapy is common throughout Europe, and its use has gradually been spreading in America over the last 25 years.

Is Ozone Therapy For Me?
Some conditions simply will not clear up unless ozone is used, and of course many conditions will clear up without ozone. Because of its many therapeutic properties, ozone can be used as part of a therapeutic plan for almost every disease.


It is invaluable in the treatment of heart disease and circulatory disorders. Chronic infections such as hepatitis-C, herpes, Lyme, and AIDS respond very favorably to ozone. It is also very helpful in chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and autoimmune diseases.


Although ozone is often an indispensable modality, it is only rarely effective by itself. In the great majority of cases it must be combined with an individualized program of other alternative and natural therapies, such as nutrition and detoxification.

What Types of Oxidative Therapies are offered at The Center for Natural & Integrative Medicine?

 

 OZONE AUTOHEMOTHERAPY

Autohemotherapy is the most common, and in most cases the most effective way ozone is administered. The patient sits in a chair and has from 6-12 ounces of blood removed into a sterilized bottle. Ozone is then injected into the bottle, and the bottle is gently shaken, allowing the red and white blood cells to take up the ozone. The ozonated blood is then returned to the body. The entire procedure takes about 30-40 minutes.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy delivers a massive influx of oxygen—even to areas with poor blood flow—and results in remarkable benefits that cannot be achieved with any other therapy.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is medicine's most efficient method of transporting oxygen to cells throughout the body. Safe and painless, it involves breathing concentrated oxygen inside a specially designed, pressurized chamber. (Hyperbaric means “under pressure.”) The result is dramatic benefits for stroke, traumatic head and spinal cord injuries, diabetic ulcers, slow-healing wounds, burns, autism, and a broad range of other conditions. How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Work?

When you breathe oxygen at normal atmospheric pressure, this gas is transported on hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Under pressure, however, oxygen dissolves in the plasma, cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and spinal cord, lymph, and other body fluids. It is therefore easily delivered to all tissues, including those with a poor blood supply. Therefore, even areas that have been deprived of oxygen are afforded the tremendous healing benefits of oxygen.
Stroke is perhaps the most dramatic example of what can happen when oxygen delivery to a vital organ is cut off. During a stroke, a blockage or bleeding in blood vessels in the brain interrupts the flow of oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood. As a result, cells in affected area die or are damaged, resulting in speech, vision, mobility, or other problems. When these areas are infused with massive amounts of oxygen during a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, damaged brain cells literally wake up.
But even more subtle oxygen deprivation resulting from poor circulation, injury, surgery, and other causes can retard healing and impair function. That’s why HBOT benefits so many diverse conditions.


HBOT Works on Multiple Fronts
HBOT also works on other fronts to promote healing. It curbs infection by providing a hostile environment to anaerobic bacteria, which thrive in the absence of oxygen. It promotes the growth of new capillaries and blood vessels to areas with poor circulation and boost collagen formation. It also mobilizes stem cells.


Stem cells have the unique ability to transform into a variety of cell types. Although you usually hear about embryonic stem cells and the like, we all harbor stem cells in our own bodies, primarily in our bone marrow, and they can be called into action to repair organs and tissues.  Studies show that after just one HBOT treatment, concentrations of circulating stem cells doubled, and after a full course, there was an eight-fold increase in these rejuvenating cells.


These unique mechanisms, coupled with the healing powers of oxygen, provide tremendous benefits. Stroke patients once told there was no hope of regaining function are walking and talking again. Diabetics scheduled for limb amputation due to gangrenous ulcers have cancelled surgeries. Patients with disease and autism make dramatic strides. And people with serious burns, trauma, and other injuries heal rapidly and return to normal function much earlier than anticipated.

What is a Hyperbaric Pressure Chamber?
It is a large pressurized chamber that is pressurized with air. After the appropriate pressure is achieved, the patient will be able to breathe pure oxygen through either a mask or a hood. There are different types of chamber, one being the “mono-place” and the other being the “multi-place”. The term “multi-place” refers to having more than one compartment, whereas “mono-place” has only one compartment. What does a treatment feel like?
A typical treatment lasts for one hour. During that time you will experience a feeling similar to flying in a plane or diving to the bottom of a pool. When the chamber is initially being pressurized you will experience a loud sound and a slight temperature change. The chamber will get warm at first because as you add pressure to any given object, the temperature increases. As the chamber reaches the appropriate pressure, the temperature will adjust to a comfortable setting. Air pressure must be equalized in the ears during the 10 minute compression and decompression phases by either swallowing or yawning. All treatments are supervised by a physician and highly trained medical personnel. 

What should patients do before a treatment?
Patients seeking this treatment will need to refrain from wearing certain materials in the chamber such as: hair oils, hairspray, perfumes, make-up, nylons (panty hose), ointments, liniments, petroleum or vaseline products, wigs or hair pieces, aftershave, synthetics (i.e. rayon, nylon, etc.), or salves. Other items such as glasses, watches, and jewelry should not be worn in the chamber either; these items can easily be damaged while under pressure. No flammable materials are allowed in the chamber.

 

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE (H2O2)

In IV H2O2 therapy, Hydrogen peroxide is infused into the circulatory system through a vein in the arm. It drips in over a ninety-minute period. In the blood, it encounters two enzymes: catalase and cytochrome-C. Catalase drives the above reaction to completion immediately. That part of the hydrogen peroxide that binds with cytochrome-C, however, is not allowed to become water and singlet oxygen for a period of forty minutes. After forty minutes of being bound to cytochrome-C this enzyme begins to act like catalase and breaks down the hydrogen peroxide to water and singlet oxygen. By this time, the hydrogen peroxide/cytochrome-C complex has been spread throughout the body. In this way the benefits of hydrogen peroxide are made available to all cells.
The effect of singlet oxygen in the human body is twofold.

1. It kills, or severely inhibits the growth of, anaerobic organisms (bacteria and viruses that use carbon dioxide for fuel and leave oxygen as a by-product). This action is immediate, on contact with the anaerobic organism. Anaerobic bacteria are pathogens, the organisms which cause disease. All viruses are anaerobic.
Aerobic bacteria (those that burn oxygen for fuel and leave carbon dioxide as a by-product — as humans do) found in the human intestine are friendly bacteria, which aid in digestion. These organisms thrive in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.


2. H2O2 provides singlet oxygen, which, in turn, transforms biological waste products and industrial toxins into inert substances by oxidizing them. This makes them easy to handle for the kidneys and liver. It doubles the rate of enzymatic metabolism in the mitochondria within each cell, thus enabling the body to cleanse itself of toxins and still have plenty of energy to handle the business of living from moment to moment. This increase in metabolism probably accounts for some of the antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects of hydrogen peroxide.


Hydrogen peroxide is a part of normal metabolism.
Your body produces it constantly. There are units in certain white blood cells called "peroxisomes," which produce H2O2. These white cells then engulf bacteria which cause disease and mix them together with these peroxisomes. They both then disappear as the singlet oxygen from H2O2 destroys the bacteria or virus. This happens naturally, without any help from outside sources of hydrogen peroxide.


When an infective disease becomes obvious to the person who has the infection the hydrogen peroxide defense mechanism already has been overwhelmed by the number of viruses or bacteria involved, and the immune system is into its secondary line of defense: the tedious process of analyzing the invading organism and making antibodies, which deal specifically with that organism.


Conditions which can be treated with H2O2 include those conditions which can be treated with antibiotics, but without the serious toxicity often associated with laboratory produced synthetic antibiotics. Some of these conditions are candidiasis (yeast), viral infections, influenza, the common cold, sinus infection, Epstein-Barr virus and gangrene.


Hydrogen peroxide also has been found to dissolve cholesterol and calcium deposits associated with atherosclerosis. Therefore, it is a good treatment for vascular disorders. This can result in lessening or disappearance of angina, leg pain and transient ischemic attacks to the brain, which causes dizziness. It also can help reverse some of the damage left over by a stroke, if treatment is instituted early enough.


Research in the 1960s at Baylor University showed conclusively that intra-arterial hydrogen peroxide dissolves plaque in large arteries. This makes H2O2 a wonderful complement to EDTA in the treatment of vascular disease, as EDTA has been shown to clear small vessels and create collateral circulation around large vessel blockages. This combination is called "Chelox Therapy."


It also clears the lungs, in cases of emphysema, by producing oxygen bubbles in the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs), literally lifting the mucus deposits up, so they can be coughed out.


Hydrogen peroxide has a remarkable clearing effect on the skin. After only a few intravenous treatments the skin takes on a translucent clarity usually seen only in children. In addition, hydrogen peroxide benefits asthma, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, degenerative spinal disc disease and high blood pressure. It is particularly effective with asthma, arthritis and back disorders.


The most fundamental feature of a cancer cell is that it is relatively anaerobic. It needs sixty percent less oxygen than a normal healthy cell. It does very poorly in the presence of excess oxygen. All of this points toward the oxidative therapies as a decent treatment for cancer and a decent preventive measure as well. Apparently, cancer is the cell's attempt to survive under conditions of a low supply of oxygen. If your cells are well oxygenated, they may have no reason to transform into cancer cells. It may be that the way toxins promote cancer is by interfering with the use of oxygen by cells.


Intravenous Hydrogen Peroxide Therapy
Do not take vitamins on the day of the treatment. It works against all anaerobic organisms which use CO2. These include all viruses, mutated Candida, gangrene, and bacteria. Is not of any benefit to take orally as must be in the bloodstream.


In bio-oxidative medicine, oxygen is introduced directly into the body as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or as ozone (O3). When toxins are released from the cells of the body, they must cross the space between those cells and the outside. Ultimately, they exit the body through the lungs, the liver, the kidneys, and the pores of the skin. Detoxification can feel temporarily worse than the disease. It may be accompanied by headache, fatigue, grouchiness, insomnia and body pains for days or even, in very diseased states, weeks. Hydrogen peroxide is no exception. Be prepared for these kinds of results on your trip to a clear state of health.


To benefit your body, the H2O2 must reach your circulation, where it can be broken down by catalase and bound by cytochrome-C for distribution throughout your body in the following forty minutes. You should not eat anything for at least twenty minutes after taking the H2O2.
